TYPES OF MEANING

I don't want to spend a whole lot of time on this, but I do want to take enough time to be clear that there are, unambiguously, numerous types of meaning.

SEMANTICS

A.                Semantics
The word semantics which comes from Greece sema (noun) which means ‘symbol’ or ‘sign’. The verb is Semaino which means ‘signify’. The symbol of the synonymy of sema is linguistic sign (France: sine linguistique) (Chaer, 1995: 2). Saussure (1996) states that linguistic sign consists of (1) the signifier, component, in sort of sounds and (2) the signified, the referent outside of language. Semantics is a term which is used in linguistics, which studies the relation between linguistic sign and signified thing. In other words, semantics is a branch of linguistics which studies about the meaning.

DERIVATIONAL MORPHEMES IN ENGLISH

DERIVATIONAL MORPHEMES IN ENGLISH

Abstract

This paper describes morphemes which are the smallest units of language which have meaning, especially derivational morphemes. Derivation is one of the kinds of word formation. Derivational morphemes are bound morphemes or affixes  which derive or create new words by either changing the meaning or the part of speech or both. English derivational morphemes can be classified into two namely derivational prefixes and derivational suffixes. Most of the English prefixes do not change part of speech although they are derivational. The derived words  undergo the change of meaning. On the contrary, Most of derivational suffixes change part of speech.

ENGLISH MORPHOSYNTACTIC STRUCTURE

1. Introduction

Linguistics as the scientific study of language has several branches such us phonetics, phonology, semantics morphology and syntax.  The two branches which are mentioned later namely morphology and syntax are now often combined into one unity called morphosyntax.
